Funeral for Mrs. Curley (Turney) Shelby of Jeannette, PA and formerlly of Hartselle, AL will be 11am Saturday at Hartselle Missionary Baptist Church and burial to follow in Hartselle Cemetery. Public Viewing will be Thursday from 2-6pm and Friday 10am-6pm at Reynolds Funeral Home.

Curley Mae (Turney) Shelby was born September 25, 1923, to the union of Dasie (Orr) Turney and Levi Turney, in Hartselle, AL. She passed on February 4, 2016 at Forbes Regional Hospital, in Monroeville, PA. Curley was the oldest daughter of the 22 children of Levi and Dasie. Sixteen of the children lived to become adults.

Curley was raised under the Baptist faith. She attended school in Hartselle, AL. She married her first husband at an early age in Hartselle, AL. The marriage was dissolved after a few years.

She moved to Akron, OH, where she found a job and made her career as a nurse. She later met and married her second husband, Henry Shelby. Curley never had any children. She helped Mama Dasie raise her younger brother and sisters. She would often say, “I would hold two babies in my arms and another one was tugging on my dress”. She continued to look out for her brothers, sisters and her mother as they became older. She also helped out at the nursing home in Falkville, AL. after retiring. Curley was such a loving and caring person.

In 1940, Levi and Dasie, purchased 115 acres of land in Hartselle, AL. in 1971, Curley retired. She and Henry moved from Akron, OH to Hartselle, AL. She had a house built on the family land and paid cash. When she purchased a new car she would pay cash. A salesman once asked her what bank will finance your car? She said “I am paying cash.” She would often say “I am buying, not begging” (LOL)

Curley loved to work in her garden, raising fresh vegetables. She loved to sing and play the guitar. Our dearly beloved Curley will be missed. Our hearts will continue to carry her in our memory.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband Henry Shelby.

She leaves to cherish her memory: her brother, Charles Turney, Jeanette, PA; two sisters, Dorothy Turney Dunkin, Chicago, IL and Eloise Turney (Jerry) Chavez, Chicago, IL; two step-daughters, Emily Shelby and Stacy Shelby; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
