A Celebration of Life for Mrs. Annie Mae Puryear, 82 of Decatur, Alabama. will be 10:00 am Saturday, 16, 2021 at Reynolds Funeral Home and inhumation in Decatur City Cemetery. Public viewing will be Friday from 1:00 pm- 6:00 pm at Reynolds Funeral Home.
Annie Mae Puryear was born on October 28, 1938 to the late Mary (Steward) Bryant and Wiley Bryant in Greenwood, Mississippi. She confessed her hope in Christ at the tender age of 12 years old at Wood Chapel AME Church in Greenwood, Mississippi. After living in Greenwood, she moved to Chicago, Illinois with her mother Mary Bryant at the age of 19. Annie Mae Puryear was the youngest girl of two sisters and three brothers. In 1963 she met and married the late Earl Puryear of Chicago, Illinois who affectionally called her “Baby Girl.” God blessed this union with 4 beautiful daughters. In 1967 Annie and Earl purchased their first home at 1857 S. Springfield in Chicago, Illinois where they reared their four daughters. In 1994 Annie and Earl relocated to Decatur, Alabama where she lived until her passing on January 6, 2021 at Decatur General Hospital at 3:00 A.M.
Annie Mae Puryear was a wise, strong and God-fearing womanwho taught her four daughters at an early age to believe in God. She was the matriarch and backbone of her family. She put all of her children in Catholic school to give them a Godly education. She also believed in higher education. She attended Jones Commercial Evening School and Harold Washington College in Chicago, Illinois. She passed on her belief in college education to her four daughters and made sure they became educated.
In 2006, at the age of 68, Annie Mae Puryear fulfilled her life-long dream to walk in Jerusalem, Israel. Not only did she visit Jerusalem, but also visited Jordan and Egypt. Following in the steps of Jesus who was baptized in the Jordan River 2000 years ago by John the Baptist, she also was baptized in the Jordan River.
Annie Mae Puryear leaves to cherish her memory, her 4daughters: Barbara Ann Puryear of Decatur, Alabama, Junette Valerie Puryear of Decatur, Alabama, Tracy Yolanda Puryear Zieff of Wilmette, Illinois and Quinichette Puryear of Chicago, Illinois; three brothers, James Bryant of Chicago, Illinois; the late Eddie Steward of Chicago, Illinois; the late Williot Bryant of Chicago, Illinois; two sisters, the late Mary Swims of Chicago, Illinois and the late Bertha Swims of Chicago, Illinois, one son-in-law Jon Zieff of Wilmette, Illinois and one granddaughter Briana Rose Zieff of Wilmette, Illinois and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
