Mother Beatrice Torain Coffey was born on July 12, 1925 to the late Reverend Richard and Pearl White Torain in Lawrence County, Alabama. She departed this life on April 21, 2020 surrounded by her family.
Mother Coffey accepted Christ as her personal Lord and Savior at an early age at Canaan Missionary Baptist Church where she served faithfully for many years. She was instrumental in the move of Canaan from the Tick Island location to the Kirby Road location. She was very active in the Missionary Ministry by working with the Sister’s Aide Society, Sunbeam Band, and Matrons. She was also active with the youth, and she started the junior choir. She was a dedicated mother of the church and adult choir member until her health declined.
Mother Coffey attended the O’Canaan Missionary Baptist Parochial School until 6th grade and later transferred to Courtland Colored School. She was a licensed beautician specializing in press and curl styles and a private childcare provider to many relatives and people in the community.
Mother Coffey had a love for her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends, but she absolutely loved fishing. Fishing was her favorite hobby, and a close second was basketball. She loved watching Michael Jordan play with the Chicago Bulls.
