Funeral Service for Mr. Brentson Bell Sr.,75, of Decatur, AL. will be 1:00 Sunday at Moulton Heights Church of Christ. Mr. Bell will lie in repose 30 min prior to service. Inhumation will follow in Decatur City Cemetery-Sterrs Addition.
Public viewing will be Saturday from Noon until 4:00PM at Reynolds Funeral Home.
Retired First Sergeant Brentson Jerome Bell Sr., affectionately known as 1st Sgt Bell, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, servant leader, and proud United States Marine, was born on May 24,1950, in Birmingham, Alabama, in the Pratt City community. He spent his childhood years in Boyd, Alabama, Sumter County, where he was known as an energetic and agile boy who loved
the outdoors.
At age ten, Brentson suffered a serious injury, breaking his right leg and receiving a metal rod in his femur—an early test that revealed his lifelong resilience. By age twelve, he was on his own and traveled to Decatur, Alabama, where Ms. Annie Johnson welcomed him as her adopted son, providing love and stability.
He attended Lakeside High School and graduated in 1969.Though awarded a scholarship to Tennessee State University, his desire to see the world and serve a higher calling led him to enlist in the United States Marine Corps that same year.
First Sergeant Bell served twenty distinguished years in the Marine Corps, beginning with recruit training at MCRD San Diego, followed by Infantry Training and Motor Transport Operators School at Camp Pendleton. He held numerous operational, leadership, and overseas assignments, earning respect as a steady and principled leader. His service included assignments with 1st Marine Division, 3d Marine Aircraft Wing in Okinawa, 2d Motor Transport Battalion at Camp Lejeune, and senior supply and leadership roles across Okinawa, Georgia, Mississippi, and Korea. Promoted to First Sergeant in May 1986 and he concluded his career as First Sergeant of Headquarters and Service Company, 2d Surveillance, Reconnaissance, and Intelligence Group. Throughout his career, 1st Sgt Bell completed extensive professional military education and earned multiple decorations, including the Navy Achievement Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, U.S. Marine Corps Gold Jump Wings, three Rifle Expert qualifications, and the Good Conduct Medal (5th Award).
In 1971, Brentson met the love of his life while walking to the park, introduced by Ms. Susan Johnson, who said, “Jerome is a nice guy.” That meeting led to a lifelong love. With the blessing of her father, Lester Morris Sr., he married Patricia Yvonne Morris in 1973. They shared 52 years of marriage and raised four children: Stacey Yvonne Bell; Brentson J. Bell Jr. (Gale Ann Bell); and twin sons Brandon James Bell (Aquarius Bell) and Brian Earl Bell. Family was central to his life, and he cherished every moment with them.
After retiring from the Marine Corps, First Sergeant Bell served his community through Decatur Utilities and later the United States Postal Service. During this time, he gave his life to Christ and was baptized at Moulton Heights Church of Christ, anchoring his life in faith to God. First Sergeant Brentson Jerome Bell Sr. was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur James Bell and Malinda Bell, and his brothers Willie Hue Bell, Early Bell, and Sammy Bell.
He leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife Patricia Yvonne Morris Bell; his children; and his grandchildren—2LT Jace Bell (U.S. Army), Chandler Brown, Jayden Bell, Adrian “A.J.” Bell, Kameron Bell, Karrington Bell, his precious granddaughter Keirian Bell, as well as his two sisters, Nadine Bell-Page and Charlotte Bell. plus, extended family, friends, and Marines whose lives he touched.
1st Sgt Bell(Retired)will be remembered for his unwavering love for family, faithful service to his country, devotion to God, and quiet strength. His legacy—anchored in sacrifice, strength, and love—will continue to inspire all who knew him.
