Eleanor Olivia Dawson Mitchell, affectionately known as “Ella,” was the treasured youngest of 13 children born to the late Benton Brown Dawson and Datie Olivia Basham Dawson in Decatur, Alabama. From an early age, Eleanor’s life was rooted in faith. She accepted Christ as a child and worshiped with her family at Jones Chapel Methodist Church in Decatur, which later merged with Kings Memorial United Methodist Church.

Faith remained the cornerstone of Eleanor’s life. After the Mitchell family moved to southwest Atlanta in 1965, Eleanor and Elnetta became members of Bethlehem United Methodist Church, where she lent her gifts as a faithful choir member and as the coordinator of the Acolytes. In 1998, Eleanor and Elnetta joined Cascade United Methodist Church, where her service and witness flourished. She not only lifted her voice in praise through the Gospel Choir and Women’s Chorus, but she was also steadfast in her effort to strengthen the music ministry. She shared sisterhood through United Women in Faith (formerly United Methodist Women), grew spiritually in various Bible study groups including Women of the Word (WOW), and gave generously of her time as a loyal front office volunteer.

Those who knew Eleanor remember her as soft-spoken, yet strong; gentle, yet unshakable in her convictions. She was the epitome of presence, peace, purpose, and prudence in every interaction. She delighted in cheering for her beloved Atlanta Braves and Atlanta Falcons, and she cherished the bonds of family and friendship that sustained her throughout her life. Her legacy is one of faith, love, and grace. Her life was a quiet, powerful testimony—an example of commitment to God, to family, and to community.

Eleanor leaves to cherish her memory her devoted daughter, Elnetta D. Mitchell (Atlanta, GA); her beloved bonus daughter, Barbara A. Sims (Athens, GA); her sister, Edna Mae Dawson Priest (Decatur, AL); her sister-in-love, Juanita Mitchell Long (Atlanta, GA); and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, extended relatives, and dear friends.
