Eva Mae Swoope Horton, age 97, departed this earthly life and began her eternal life on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, at Athens Health and Rehab Center, Athens, Alabama. She was born in Lawrence County (Hillsboro) to the late Mr. Smith and Mrs. Gertrude King Swoope on August 18, 1928. Eva was the oldest of 10 children.
She accepted Christ as her personal Savior at an early age and united with the First Missionary Baptist Church of Hillsboro and later became a member of Canaan Missionary Baptist Church.
Eva received her formal education from Tennessee Valley High School (TVHS) in Hillsboro, Alabama. She attended Alabama State University and Florence State University (University of North Alabama). She was united in holy matrimony to the late Walter Horton and to this union six children were born; Patricia, Brenda, Sherry, Jacqueline, Walter and Randy. Eva taught briefly at Tennessee Valley High School in early childhood education and later worked at Decatur General Hospital as a lab technician.
She was a faithful member of Canaan and served on the Mother Board... Mother Horton. She was a long standing member of Corrinda Chapter #97 Order of the Easter Star and served as the Worthy Matron for many years. When she was able, she loved to sing "Grace... His Grace is sufficient for me. His grace will give you the victory." Her homemade banana pudding and coconut cake were by far the greatest.
She was preceded in death by: her husband, Walter C. Horton; parents; one daughter, Patricia Ann Horton Wynn (Fred Wynn); one sister, Sarah Jackson; and three brothers, Percy Lee Swoope, Samuel Swoope, and Cornelius Swoope.
Eva leaves to cherish her heartfelt memory: three daughters, Brenda J. Almond of Hillsboro, AL, Sherry Y. Horton of Birmingham, AL, and Dr. Jacqueline A. Horton of Huntsville, AL; two sons, Walter R. (Carolyn) Horton of Murfreesboro, TN and Randy C. Horton of Hillsboro, AL; five grandchildren, Marlon Harris of Madison, AL, Adrian (Daphne) Wynn of Shreveport, LA, Andrea Almond of Decatur, AL, Dr. Krystle Horton of Murfreesboro, TN, and Tyler Bolden of Nashville, TN; four great-grandchildren, Jaydon, Jasmine, Brooklyn, and Noa; four sisters, Mattye Swoope of Hillsboro, AL, Cathryn Trammell of Decatur, AL, Dorothy Symonette, and Helen Swoope of Cleveland, OH; one brother, Jessie Swoope of Cleveland, OH; a devoted friend, Mattie Lee Miller; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
