A Celebration of Life for Mr. Freddie “Sonny” Sykes 76 of Decatur, AL be noon Wednesday, February 19, 2020 at Bethlehem P.B. Church in Hillsboro with the Reverend Antwon Plott officiating. Inhumation will follow repast in Calvary Memorial Gardens. The body will lie in repose one hour prior to service. Public viewing will Tuesday from 10-6 at Reynolds Funeral Home.
Freddie Edward (Sonny) Sykes was born March 15, 1943 in Hillsboro, AL to the late Thomas and Gurnice Jackson Sykes. On February 12, 2020, our Heavenly Father sent the Angel of Everlasting Life to the Hospice Family Care Center in Huntsville, AL to take his child home.
He accepted Christ at an early age and was reared in a Christian and loving family. He graduated from Tennessee Valley High School in Hillsboro AL in 1961. Freddie was employed at 3M in Decatur, AL for many years. In 1968, he relocated to Los Angeles, CA and was employed at Essex Chemical in La Mirada, CA for many years. He returned back to AL in 1985. He resided in Decatur where he was self-employed at Sykes’s Tree Services for many years. He was a lover of basketball and football; but his passion was basketball.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Gurnice Sykes; sister, Vergie Jean Sykes Bell; brother, John Edward Sykes; son, James Thompson, grandson, Dexter Hall Jr. and sister-in-law, Tomella Gaiter Sykes.
Freddie’s legacy and memory will forever be embedded in the hearts of his family. He leaves to cherish his memory: a devoted and special friend of many years, Betty Jones of Decatur; three loving daughters, Casandra Sykes Hall (Dexter) of Lancaster, CA, Tina Yarbrough of Decatur and LaSonya Sykes of Toledo, OH; six step-children, Sharon Jones, Walter (Zonita) Jones, Jomo (Demetria) Jones, Muhammed (Brittney) Jones, Miranda (Steve) Toney and Charles (Amy) Jones; three grandsons, Marcus Holland (whom he raised), Derrick Hall and Derrell Hall; one granddaughter, Katrina Yarbrough; 18 step-grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one loving and devoted sister, Frances Ann (Johnny) of Hillsboro, AL, one devoted brother, Tommy Sykes, Jr. of Decatur; one aunt, Mary Jo Garth of Ambler, PA; one brother-in-law, Lawrence Bell of Decatur; two special friends, Sanford (Red) Stovall and Bennie (Shug) Lane, both of Decatur; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
