George William “Chee Chee” Wheeler, a.k.a. “Blackman,” was born on August 02, 1956 at Decatur General Hospital to the late Cashin Wheeler Sr. and Minnie Nelson Wheeler. He departed this life October 27, 2024 in Decatur, AL.

He confessed his faith in Christ at young age and joined Westside Missionary Baptist Church. George love to sing as a kid and asked his mother for a guitar. He began mastering his skill as a guitarist, and eventually learned to play the bass. He was affectionately known for singing in a falsetto tone and putting a band together with himself as the lead singer.

His love of sports was sparked by his father, who coached a little league baseball team. Throughout his childhood and teenage years, George excelled at football, basketball and baseball for the community team and in high school. He graduated from Austin High School in 1974 and continued his athletic endeavors and education at Morehouse College in Atlanta, GA.

George returned to Decatur to work at General Motors, but his entrepreneurial spirit led him to become the proprietor of several businesses in Decatur, AL and Atlanta, GA. Some of the businesses included a car dealership, a sports bar and a barbershop. Over the years, George followed his father’s footsteps and became active in the community through coaching. He coached on the Cashin Wheeler little league baseball team and became a mentor to countless children in the community. We were all excited to see his newest endeavor that honored his mother, Mrs. Minnie’s Kitchen.

George was known for his love of foreign cars, riding horses through the neighborhood with his brothers, and wearing western attire. His sense of style was unmatched but it was easily overshadowed by his charismatic personality, positive attitude, and big smile. We can all attest to the magic that you felt in Chee Chee’s presence. To know George was to love him. To know George’s love is to have a brother, uncle, father, friend or companion for a lifetime.

George was preceded in death by his father, Cashin Wheeler, Sr.; and brothers, Cashin “Tim” Wheeler, Jr., and Clarkton “Cadillac” Wheeler.

He is survived by his children, Kristin Wheeler, Tiffany Fain, Lindsay Marshall, and Fortune Wheeler; bonus children, De’Vonte Hampton and Lendez Hampton; grandchildren, Micah Marshall and Chloë Wheeler; loving mother, Minnie Nelson Wheeler; sister, Linda Wheeler; godbrothers, James Stegall and Hurley Rice; aunt, Virgie Byrd; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
