Gregory Jerome Stewart, a charismatic and impeccably stylish man, passed away on Saturday, April 29th, 2023, at Decatur Morgan Hospital, after an extended illness. Known for his feisty personality, this talkative communicator never met anyone he considered a stranger, to him everyone was family. He loved his family unconditionally and routinely ended phone calls with the phrase, “I love you, and there’s nothing you can do about it!” Greg was well-traveled, collecting antiques and eclectic pieces of art from around the world.

Gregory was born in Decatur, Alabama on December 30, 1950, to the late Doris Gaines and Arthur Stewart. He was reared by his grandparents, the late G.W. and Lois Garth, and he spent his formative years with them.

His spiritual growth was established at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church in Decatur, where he attended services with his grandparents. He attended Cherry Street Elementary School and graduated from Lakeside High School in 1969. Later that year his first child, Carlos, was born. Gregory was an excellent percussionist and drum major for his high school band. He was also class president and an escort to Miss Lakeside High. After graduation, he attended Alabama State University and Career Academy broadcasting school in Chicago, Illinois.

Gregory moved to Los Angeles, California where he was employed by Northrop Grumman for many years. There he met Michelle Sarpy, his devoted companion until her death. To this union a daughter, Tamika, was born. He was later blessed with a second daughter, Saroyal.

After four decades he returned to Decatur in 2015 to be closer to his family and friends.

He leaves to cherish his loving memory his son, Carlos Greene (Dwanna) of Nashville, Tennessee; and two daughters, Tamika Stewart of Decatur, Alabama, and Saroyal Stewart-Dunn (Marcus) of Dallas, Texas; and grandchildren, Brendan Greene of Nashville, and Jeremiah Dunn of Dallas. He will be sadly missed by sisters, Nell Knott (Birmingham, AL), and Danielle Stewart (Redlands, California); brothers, Frank Stewart (California), and George Balentine (Chicago, IL); an Aunt Sandy Jones. He is lovingly mourned by his dear cousin, Judy Jackson Allen, special friends John Lewis Stevenson Decatur, Alabama, Johnny Johnson, Atlanta, Georgia, as well as a host of other cousins, extended family, and friends. In addition to his parents and grandparents, he is preceded in death by his brothers, Lamont Bolden and Arthur Stewart, Jr.

He will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
