Kenneth Reedus Obituary

A Celebration of Life Services for Mr. Kenneth Reedus, 85 of Decatur, Alabama will be Noon, Saturday June 4, 2022 at Shiloh Baptist Church with the Rev. Fredrick Outlaw officiating. Inhumation will follow in Sterrs Cemetery. Public viewing will be Friday June 3,2022 from 1:00PM until 5:00PM at Reynolds Funeral Home.  

Kenneth Reedus was born May 19th, 1937 in Decatur, AL to the late Lewis Reedus Jr. and Augusta Sloss Reedus of Elkton, TN. He was the youngest of eight children. He attended Carver Elementary School and Decatur Negro High before graduating from Lakeside High School. He then attended Tennessee State University and Alabama A&M where he played football. Later he attended barber school in Detroit, Michigan and he graduated in 1959. He worked for the Amoco Corporation for 17 years while barbering for the GW Garth Barbershop. He eventually transitioned to his own location that he operated for over three decades, where he was affectionately known as "Master Reedus, Big Boppa, Pops, Lad, King Tut, Big and Father." He was a co-founder and an esteemed member of the semi-pro football team, which he aptly named the "Rough Riders" out of Morgan County, AL, from 1959 - 1966. They would go on to have a record of 66-1. He was also a member of Decatur Nationals, also a semi-pro team.  In 2019 he received the NAACP Humanitarian Award for his dedication and service to the North Alabama community. He was united in marriage to Mrs. Wylodene Brown Reedus in Decatur, AL on April 5, 1989. Together they raised seven children. He was a member of Wayman Chapel in Decatur, AL as a child and later converted to Islam under the Nation of Islam. His legacy lives on through 44 grandchildren and 62 great – grandchildren and a host of cousins, other relatives and frends.
