A Service of Love and Remembrance for Mrs. Lula Derrick Lee, 103 of Athens, Alabama will be noon Tuesday, January 7, 2020 at David Temple M.B. Church in Tanner and inhumation will be in David Temple Cemetery. The body will lie in repose one hour prior to funeral. Public viewing will be Sunday from 2-6 and Monday from 10-6 at Reynolds Funeral Home.
Mrs. Lula Derrick Lee was born February 4, 1916 to the late Jack and Mollie Derrick in Limestone County, Alabama. She passed this life on January 1, 2020. She was blessed with 103 long years.
Mrs. Lula was baptized in Swan Creek by Pastor John McKinney, and united with the David Temple Missionary Baptist Church in Tanner, Alabama where she was a lifelong member. She told family that the day she was baptized and she came up out of the water and that day she knew she was a “free born child, live always, and ain’t gonna never die.” She said she felt so light that day as if she was going to fly away.
Mrs. Lula was united in Holy Matrimony to the late Lee W. Lee. They enjoyed 69 years of marriage before his death. Although she never had children, she raised many of her nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Lula was preceded in death by her husband, Lee W. Lee, and all her sisters: Mae Willie Gill, Alice “Black Gal” Madry, Laura Clark, Agnes Derrick, Olivia Derrick, Mae Dee Robinson, Beulah Perkins, Leona “Cricket” Hines, and brothers: John Erskine Derrick and Eddie “Bo” Derrick.
Mrs. Lula leaves to cherish her memories, her nephew and caregiver, L.C. Gill, of Athens, AL; step-daughter, Fannie (James) Bumpus, of Louisville, KY, Douglas Williams and Sydney Williams, both of Athens, AL and her buddy and great grandniece, Ziah Gill, of Athens, AL; and her other nieces and nephews, relatives and friends.
