Graveside service for Mr. Newlyn Matthews, 80 of Decatur Alabama will be noon Friday, April 2, 2021 at Calvary Memorial Gardens with the Reverend Jerry Baker officiating. There will be no public viewing.
On March 29, 2021, God called his son, Newlyn Matthews home. Mr. Matthews was born to Chester Matthews, Sr. and the late Eunice Barker Matthews on October 29, 1940 in Decatur, Alabama.
He accepted Christ at an early age and continued to be a lifelong member of St. Peter Missionary Baptist Church.
He graduated from Morgan County Training School and was employed at Prestolite in the maintenance department until becoming disabled.
He was a very direct person, would help anyone and was a handyman that could fix anything. His passion however was golfing.
He was preceded her in death: his daughter, Marrell Matthews Napier; grandchild, Dakota Matthews; his beloved parents, Chester Matthews, Sr. and Eunice Barker Matthews; two brothers, Howard Matthews and Artis Matthews; and one sister, Ruby Matthews Elliott.
He is survived by: six sons, Mark (Tashia) Matthews, Randy (Avis) Matthews, Frandeno Matthews (Shauna Clemons), Keith (Yolanda) Turner, Calvert (Chiqui) Turner all of Decatur and Craig (Alicia) Turner of Mobile; 14 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren; one sister, Deanna Wright (William); three brothers, Chester Matthews, Jr. (Bessie), Erskin Matthews (Linda) and Larry Matthews (Norma) and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
