A Celebration of Life for the Reverend Ervin Coffey Jr., 72 of Hillsboro, AL. will be noon Saturday, June 8, 2019 at Canaan Missionary Baptist Church with the Reverend Ronald Merriweather officiating and inhumation in Sterrs Cemetery. The body will lie in repose one hour prior to funeral. Public viewing will be Thursday from 3-6 and Friday from 10-7 at Reynolds Funeral Home. Rev. Coffey died June 3, 2019 at his residence.
Ervin was born on January 31, 1947 to the late Reverend Ervin Coffey, Sr. and Beatrice Torain Coffey in Lawrence County, Alabama. He was the third child and oldest boy of twelve children. He departed this life on June 3, 2019 at his home surrounded by family.
Ervin accepted Christ as his personal savior in August 1959 and joined Canaan Missionary Baptist Church where he served faithfully as a member of the male chorus, Sunday school teacher, Sunday school superintendent, a deacon, and founder of the Brotherhood ministry. He was called into the ministry in 1993. In 2000, he was installed as pastor of Mt. Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church in Valhermoso Springs, Alabama, where he served until his health declined.
Ervin graduated from Tennessee Valley High School in Hillsboro, Alabama in 1965 and attended the Birmingham Baptist Bible School at the North Alabama Academy in 1996. He was employed by Goodyear Textile Mill in Decatur, Alabama for 38 years. While at Goodyear, Ervin was a member of the Top Ten Club and received the award of Excellence as a Section Supervisor.
Ervin was preceded in death by his father the Reverend Ervin Coffey, Sr.; sisters, Anniphene Jones, Laura Birgan McAfee, and Reverend Juanita Coffey.
Ervin leaves to cherish his memory his loving mother Beatrice Torain Coffey of Hillsboro, AL; his loving and devoted wife of 52 years Marcella Davis Coffey of Hillsboro, AL; his son Eric (Robin) Coffey of Hillsboro, AL; a daughter Erica (Frederick) Jones of Decatur, AL; two grandchildren Erin Coffey and Jayven Jones; his sisters Barbara (Edward) Cross and Murna Booker of Decatur, AL; Shirley (Fred) Gray and Donna (Diphillip) Garner of Montgomery, AL; his brothers Richard (Willodean) Coffey, Albert (Diane) Coffey, Troy (Nita) Coffey, Scott (Lyvonne) Coffey of Hillsboro, AL; and Eugene (Anita) Coffey of New Orleans, LA; two adopted sisters, Mary Sue Bowman and Janetta Perkins of Decatur, AL; and a special friend, caregiver, brother, and son Larry (Vernita) Watkins of Hillsboro, AL; and a host of loving sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousin, neighbors and friends.
