A Celebration of Life for Mrs. Sarah Jane Raybon, 85 of Decatur, AL. and formerly of Athens, AL will be 11:00 AM Saturday, November 9, 2019 at Shiloh M.B. Church with the Reverend Anthony Stewart officiating. Inhumation will follow in Thatch-Mann Cemetery in Athens. The body will lie in repose one hour prior to funeral. Public viewing will be Friday from 10-6 at Reynolds Funeral Home.
Mother Sarah Bass Raybon was born on April 4, 1934 to the late Willie and Lucy Scott Bass, the baby of 14 children. She entered into eternal rest on November 5, 2019 at Decatur Morgan Hospital-DGH Campus surrounded by loved ones.
She was educated in the Decatur School System. At age 20 she moved to Cleveland, Ohio. She was employed at University Hospital, worked in the Metabolic Unit for 40 years. She also worked at Limestone Help Facility, Limestone Lodges east and west; finally Limestone Manor where the Dining Room was named in her honor, The Sarah J. Raybon Dinning Room.
After retirement, Sarah and her husband, Rufus “Buddy” Raybon moved to Athens, AL and united with St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church where she served as a Mother, taught youth classes, helped in dining and a devoted and faithful member.
Sarah was very active. She sold Avon and walked the Athens High School track five days a week.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Rufus Raybon and son, Jerome Bass.
Sarah leaves to cherish her memory: a devoted nephew and niece, the Rev. Edward and Doris Franklin; one sister-in-law, Ms. Barbara Raybon of Athens, AL; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
