Tommy Cunningham Obituary

A Celebration of Life for Mr. Tommy J. Cunningham, 59 of Courtland, Alabama will be noon Saturday, March 6, 2021 at New Jerusalem P. B. Church with the Reverend Fred Ashford officiating. Inhumation will be in Early Pasture Cemetery in Wheeler, Alabama.  Public viewing will be Friday from 1:00 pm to 6:00 pm at Reynolds Funeral Home. 

Tommy James Cunningham was born December 19, 1961 in Hillsboro, AL to the late Daniel and Alice Swoopes Cunningham.  He resided in Courtland, AL before going to River City Center Nursing Home in Decatur, AL where he departed this earthly life February 28, 2021.  

Tommy attended West Morgan High School in Trinity, AL where he enjoyed playing football.  He retired from Wayne Farms in Decatur, AL after becoming disabled.  He was a member of New Jerusalem Primitive Baptist Church in Courtland, AL where he also confessed his belief in Christ under the leadership of Pastor Fred Ashford Jr., whom he admired and loved.  Tommy loved the preached word of God and always started his testimony with the phrase “I want to give my life’s honor to God”.  In addition to his love of church, he was an avid Auburn Tigers fan, loved his family, good food, his cell phone and spending time with his good friend and cousin, Michael Simpson whom he affectionately called “Big Mike”.   

Tommy was preceded in death by his parents; Daniel and Alice Cunningham, one sister and seven brothers.  

Tommy leaves to cherish his memory; his children, Marquitha Conese Bell of Decatur, AL and Charles Pooh of Decatur, AL; one grandson, Kyrie James Garrett of Decatur, AL; two devoted sisters, Edna Williams (AL) of Belle Mina, AL and Mattie Louise Ashford (Fred) of Courtland, AL; two brothers, Jesse Lee Moody (Paula) of Decatur, AL and Telly Lee of Florence, AL; Sister-in-law, Betty Mayes of Decatur, AL and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, church members and friends.
